Columbus is selected as one of five new federal workforce hubs

Columbus joins Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Augusta, Georgia , as five new “Workforce Hubs” - areas where the Biden administration will partner with state and local officials, employers, unions, community colleges, high schools, and other stakeholders to develop training programs to meet the region’s demands for labor.

The “Workforce Hub” program won’t steer extra federal money to those communities, although it will guide them to existing federal grants they can seek to support workforce development. The White House will work to expand pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeship programs anchored in those industries and will ensure that workers of every age and from every background can access these opportunities and pursue successful careers without leaving their hometowns.

Columbus was picked because it has “emerged as a center for investment across a variety of industries,” including semiconductor manufacturing, clean energy and transportation. Columbus’ community college workforce development programs and the city of Columbus’ work to pioneer registered apprenticeships will serve as a model for other cities.

The Biden administration also announced it is launching a workforce “sprint” for jobs in the advanced manufacturing space, including for semiconductors, clean energy and medicine. It will focus on jobs that don’t require a four-year college degree and aims to expand apprenticeships and education.
