The incredible power of the journeyman card

Unlike many careers, the path to becoming a skilled worker does not necessarily start with a college degree. By definition, a journeyman is a skilled worker trained in a building trade or craft who has successfully completed an apprenticeship and certification program. The term “journeyman” dates back to Medieval times when workers’ guilds were just starting to form.

There were three recognized ranks of tradespeople in these guilds: apprentices, journeymen, and masters. Trade organizations still use these classifications today.

Once you have completed an apprenticeship or otherwise obtained sufficient on-the-job experience as a plumber or electrician, you are eligible to obtain a journeyman's license. You obtain this license after you pass a written examination or submit evidence that you have completed the necessary requirements.

Upon earning the journeyman license, you can find higher-paying jobs or even work independently, depending upon your state's rules for journeymen. Journeymen can choose to work for a company or as independent contractors. As an independent contractors, they can work for several companies or start their own company.

There are many benefits to becoming a licensed contractor in Ohio:

  • Most important, Ohio law requires a state license to legally perform work as a contractor.

  • A trade license provides proof of your experience and skill.

  • Only licensed contractors can: operate a business and advertise services, obtain commercial insurance, pull building permits, pass inspections, and bid on public and government projects.

  • Securing a license protects your company and customers.

  • Licensure gives you a competitive advantage in the job market.

  • It also increases your earning potential as an electrician.
